News Release: On the Death of Bishop Patrick R. Cooney

Michigan Catholic Conference President and C.E.O. Paul A. Long today made the following statement regarding the death of the Most Reverend Patrick R. Cooney, bishop emeritus of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gaylord:

“Always present with a kind and generous spirit, Bishop Cooney lived his priestly ministry with pastoral concern for all. His warmth and friendly smile welcomed each person who was in his presence. As a member of the Michigan Catholic Conference Board of Directors, serving as Chairman of the Finance Committee, Bishop Cooney held a keen sense of finance and administration and guided deliberations with clarity, integrity and always with compassion and care for all persons. Bishop Cooney brought to the MCC Board of Directors a vibrant acumen and will always be remembered fondly for his intellect and tenderness.”

Bishop Patrick R. Cooney served on the Michigan Catholic Conference Board of Directors throughout his tenure as bishop of the Gaylord diocese. In December 1992 Bishop Cooney was elected Secretary/Treasurer of the MCC Board. In March 2004 Bishop Cooney was appointed Chairman of the MCC Audit Committee before retiring from the MCC Board of Directors in 2009.
