FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LANSING—The following statement was issued today by Paul A. Long, Vice President, Pubic Policy of the Michigan Catholic Conference regarding Sister Helen Prejean’s visit to Michigan Capitol.
“Sister Helen Prejean’s presence in our capitol today underscores the importance of Michigan’s 153 year death penalty prohibition. She has been an outspoken opponent of the death penalty. Because of her work with death row inmates and the families of murder victims, it is our hope that people will have a greater understanding of what this issue truly means—state sanctioned killing.
Michigan has a long and proud tradition of standing for life in all its stages. From its earliest days, our state has rejected the notion that killing solves crime. With the myriad of issues facing us today, this is not the time for the state to get into the business of killing.”
Michigan Catholic Conference is the official public policy voice of the Catholic Church in this state.
