News Release: On the Death of Senator Arthur Miller

(Lansing, Mich.) — The State of Michigan learned yesterday that former state Senator Arthur Miller, 73, died following a battle with cancer. In recognition of the person of Arthur Miller and the gravity of humility and personality that he brought to the upper chamber of the Michigan Legislature, Michigan Catholic Conference President and CEO Paul A. Long offered the following thoughts:

“Art Miller was a wonderful and faithful man. He was true to his convictions. He was true to his faith. He was always concerned for the common good of society for all peoples, those born and unborn. It’s been said by more than a few that he was the model Catholic legislator. We have missed his service in the legislature since he left office. Now, we will miss his presence in life. May God grant him eternal rest.”

Having first been elected to the Michigan Senate in a 1977 special election, Art Miller continued to serve his constituents for another twenty-five years until term limits vacated him from office in 2002. Senator Miller’s intellect and engaging personality were the foundations for his election as Senate Democratic Leader on five occasions, the first in 1985. A three-term Warren city councilman prior to running for state-level office, Senator Miller was married with four children.
