News Release: Catholic Conference Praises House Effort to Create Earned Income Tax Credit

(LANSING)—Michigan Catholic Conference Vice President for Public Policy Paul A. Long made the following statement today after the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed legislation that creates a state earned income tax credit equal to 20 percent of the federal credit:

“Today the House of Representatives acted in a bipartisan fashion to provide additional assistance to low-income families and individuals who are working to escape poverty,” said Long. “A state earned income tax credit will not only provide economic assistance to those who are working in low-paying jobs, but also will prove to generate economic growth in the State. By phasing in a state credit equal to 20 percent of the federal credit over two years, the House has acted in a compassionate manner to help enhance the dignity of the working poor of the state.”

Senate Bill 453, which passed the House of Representatives 103–3, will be enrolled by the Senate before heading to the governor’s desk.
