News Release: Michigan Catholic Conference Announces 2001–2002 Legislative Priorities
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 17, 2001
LANSING—A consistent pro-life ethic, education reform, improved access to health care, conscience protection for health care providers, and the creation of a state earned income tax credit top the Michigan Catholic Conference’s 2001–2002 legislative priorities.
Paul A. Long, Vice President, Public Policy, said today the Michigan Catholic Conference’s legislative priorities are based on the fundamental principle of justice for all people.
“The Catholic community is first and foremost interested in the common good and the role government plays in creating a culture that respects and cherishes life and the dignity of every human person,” said Long. “This document provides a philosophical outline and foundation for our involvement on specific legislation. The range of issues is diverse but the Church has not only a right but a serious obligation to speak out on important public policy matters.”
Published in the April issue of FOCUS, the periodic MCC publication, the legislative priorities cover the issues of human life, education, health care, children and families, basic human needs, and fiscal policies.
“As the legislature returns for the spring session,” Long said, “we believe this is the right time to release our priorities. We were most pleased that the legislature has already passed Senate Bills 70 and 71 (protecting pregnant women and their unborn children) and that the House has acted so quickly on the home heating package which we believe will be helpful to those who can ill afford huge utility increases. We look forward to working with the legislature on all of our issues.”
The MCC Board of Directors approved the legislative priorities in December 2000.
Michigan Catholic Conference is the official public policy voice of the Catholic Church in this state.
