Senate Vote on DREAM Act “A Setback, Not a Defeat”

The DREAM Act would provide a path to citizenship for young people who entered the country illegally with their parents as children or infants, provided they complete two years of higher education or two years of military service. [Link no longer available —Ed.]

2010 General Election Results

As a result of the Nov. 2 election, Rick Snyder (R) has been elected Governor, Ruth Johnson (R) Secretary of State and Bill Schuette (R) Attorney General. In the Legislature, Republicans have taken control of the Michigan House of Representatives with 63 seats and the State Senate will have a Republican “super majority” with 26 seats. Republicans will also have a 9–6 majority in the state's congressional delegation. At the Supreme Court, Republican-leaning justices reclaimed control of the court with victories from incumbent Robert Young and Mary Beth Kelly. October as Respect Life Month

In a statement to mark Respect Life Month, the chairman of the USCCB Committee for Pro-Life Activities called Catholics to “constantly witness to the inestimable worth and dignity of each human life through a loving concern for the good of others.” He also encouraged participation in the worldwide “Vigil for All Nascent Human Life” called for by Pope Benedict XVI at the start of Advent. Bishops Welcome Ruling Against Human Embryo Research Funding

Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, welcomed the federal court injunction against the Obama administration’s funding of human embryonic stem cell research, calling the ruling a “victory for common sense and sound medical ethics.” [Link no longer available —Ed.]

New Vatican-Approved Roman Missal Will Debut Advent 2011

Cardinal Francis George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago and President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), has announced that the full text of the English-language translation of the Roman Missal, Third Edition, has been issued for the dioceses of the United States of America.
