October 10, 2001

LANSING—Sister Monica Kostielney, RSM, President and CEO of the Michigan Catholic Conference, released the following statement today upon hearing of the death of former Speaker of the House William R. Ryan:

The Michigan Catholic Conference expresses deep sorrow at the death of William R. Ryan. Mr. Ryan, a former Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives, was a long time friend of the Michigan Catholic Conference.

Mr. Ryan shared the Catholic Conference’s strong mission of social justice. The right of an individual to life, food, clothing, shelter, health care and education were of paramount importance to him and the advancement of these human rights were more important to him than any other political or worldly concern.

His wisdom and counsel will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched.

Michigan Catholic Conference is the official public policy voice of the Catholic Church in this state.
